Designers: A couple of Italian architects and designers, Afra and Tobia Scarpa work with several major publishers, including Cassina, Flos and B&B Italia. Their Soriana armchair, created for Cassina, was awarded the Compasso d’Oro in 1970. Maxalto entrusted them with the design of his first collections, focused on wood and the art of cabinetmaking.
Model: This display case was designed in 1975 by Afra and Tobia Scarpa for Maxalto. A walnut structure frames its three sides and door, all made of brown smoked glass. Its rounded uprights are punctuated by geometric patterns in blackened wood.
A leather buckle acts as a handle, and brass brackets and end caps add a touch of refinement. Inside, three tinted glass shelves, one blue, one grey and one orange, bring subtle shades of colour. The precision of the assemblies and the combination of walnut, glass, leather and brass illustrate the craftsmanship that characterized Italian design in the 1970s.
