“When I was a child, I wanted to be a stonemason. I collected stones and hammers. I had a dream where I was being pulled underwater by a rock chained to my foot. I wanted to get out of the water to breathe, but the rock held me back. I could see the light, but I remained trapped. I started carving stones very early on. The stones shaped me. They guide me toward the light. Sculpture expresses this journey. My sculptures express a search for grace, for liberation. They are promises of salvation. A living work of art is not an object but a thing, and the role of the artist is not to give effect to a preconceived idea but to follow the forces and flows of matter that bring the work into existence.” François-Xavier Poulaillon.
