The reporters of France Télévision make you discover the great talent of Jonathan Soulié, coppersmith artist in his workshop in Gaillac (81 – France).
Curious, precise and inventive, Jonathan Soulié imagines and realizes unique pieces of copperware by hammering the metal to transform his copper sheets into organic sculptures or objects of art for the greatest decorators.
Copperware is the art of transforming metal sheets into a decorative or utilitarian object. To do this, several operations are carried out by the coppersmith craftsman, precision operations that make this craft a perfect marriage between skill, meticulousness, artistic sense and technical knowledge of metalworking.
The history of copperware appeared in the city of Dinant in Belgium during the Bronze Age. Red copper and brass structures were mainly produced to meet the needs of the population.
The work of other metals then emerged such as silver, tin, maillechort and even gold. Initially dedicated to tableware, the items produced have since diversified with the realization of decorative and religious art objects.
The profession of coppersmith is now rare, and the metal objects shaped by these craftsmen continue to seduce and attract followers of works made with passion and know-how. To satisfy the desires of collectors, contemporary brassware is now applied to sculpture and exceptional decorative arts.
Jonathan Soulié’s creations are represented by the OAK Oneofakind gallery in Toulouse, they are now exported all over the world.
