Inspiration: In this sculpture, Pascal Cerchi evokes the Mutus Liber — the “silent book”, an emblematic work of the alchemical tradition consisting solely of images. The book, here closed, becomes matter: alabaster, with its veins and areas of opacity, becomes a support for buried secrets. The sculptural gesture keeps this object between silence and revelation. The artist plays with the boundary between the mineral and the symbolic, inviting the viewer to project his own stories onto this book whose pages remain forever sealed.
Edition: Unique piece, signed by the artist.
Artist: Pascal Cerchi is a sculptor based in Paris.
“It is the stones that hold and offer the work once completed. I am only accompanying this metamorphosis from the raw to the visible. Emotion, which is possible, belongs to another way of looking at things, and that’s right. Alabaster, in addition to being soft, has another particularity: its translucency. So that all the subjects that emerge are full of the ambient light of the world, this silent treasure. Archetypes and symbols populate my bestiary. Animals, idols, books, keys, anchors… I sometimes wonder who they will live with… I love their freedom and independence.” Pascal Cerchi

Born into a childhood spent between Antibes and Tehran, Pascal Cerchi studied interior architecture at the Camondo school in Paris. Working with the very material of its Alabaster blocks, the artist seeks to reveal their hidden sculptures: thus emerges a bestiary of vestiges, symbols, and excavated objects, as if unearthed from the stone.
