From May 26 to June 18, 2023, the exhibition “Mises en scènes croisées” of Thierry Genay and Sébastien Pioch’s photographs offers two singular and complementary views that confirm Lapérouse’s installation in our contemporary world.
The Toulouse photographer Thierry Genay looks at a selection of vases, plates, pieces of metal and earthenware from the stranded ships of Lapérouse. This photographic work revisits a pictorial genre, that of still life. Here, Thierry is also a painter, recalling the refined style of seventeenth-century artists. The result is a series of contemporary photographs influenced by Flemish painting.
For its part, theAlbigensian Sébastien Pioch presents a series of large-format portraits. Realizing last December and January a photographic report on the restoration of the statue, he was touched by the work of the various craftsmen he was able to meet: “Beyond the restoration work, which is remarkable, I saw the passion, the involvement, the energy and especially the cohesion between these men, whether they are simple craftsmen, best France workers or apprentices” says Sébastien. More than twenty people took their seats in front of his lens “During these sessions at the Gillet foundry, each craftsman in uniform chose his break and sometimes an object that represents him or to which he is attached,” says the photographer. A beautiful series of shots that takes these men from the shadows to the light.
