Inspiration: Sophie Brillouet has prepared two large-scale works for ” Révélations”, the International Biennial of Artistic Crafts and Creation International Biennial of Artistic Crafts and Creation which took place under the glass roof of the Grand Palais from May 21 to 25, 2021. This diptych can only catch the eye of visitors, as well as the interest of lovers of Fernando Pessoa and his “Maritime Ode”, to which this diptych pays tribute.

In Ode Maritime, Sophie Brillouet deploys a veritable topography of the living, entirely composed of meticulously assembled shells. The diptych is organized like a landscape in motion: undulations, strata and curves evoke in turn the tides, the dunes, or the sea currents.

The tactile richness of the work is central. Pearly shells, spirals, polished or matt fragments make up an organic writing of great precision. Each shell becomes a module, a cell, participating in an almost textile weft, where repetition generates rhythm and variation creates relief.

Between bas-relief and mosaic, the work oscillates between compositional rigour and sensitive poetry. Ode Maritime is a meditation on the long term — that of the sea, erosion and collection — but also on the artist’s patient gesture, which transforms natural matter into an inner landscape.

Sophie Brillouet is an art craftsman specializing in the staging of natural, uncut and non-colored seashells. Humanity is deeply linked to seashells for their aesthetic, nurturing, symbolic and spiritual qualities. These natural treasures echo his childhood in Charente-Maritime, with the Atlantic Ocean and its creatures as subjects for contemplation. Sophie Brillouet made her debut in 2014, as artistic assistant to Blott Kerr-Wilson in France and the United States of America (Palm Beach / Florida). At the end of 2015, she chose to follow her own path, guided by her director’s eye, her inspirations born in travels and her artistic references: Surrealism, the Nabis movement and Pop art in particular. Humor and spirituality also feature prominently in her research.
