THE LADY WITH THE UNICORN DIALOGUE WITH CONTEMPORARY ART AT THE ABATTOIRS DE TOULOUSE

The artist duo Bella Hunt & SDC is invited to dialogue with The Lady with the Unicorn, the masterpiece of the Cluny Museum exhibited from an unprecedented perspective at Les Abattoirs, the museum of contemporary art in Toulouse. An exhibition to discover from October 30, 2021 to January 16, 2022.

Taking advantage of the opportunity of the renovation work of the Museum of Cluny – National Museum of the Middle Ages, these six tapestries travel for the first time to a place of contemporary art, the museum Les Abattoirs in Toulouse. Working on two different eras, two institutions nevertheless come together in their approach: collect, preserve, study, to transmit, discuss and share with the public. This proposal therefore offers a strong framework for reflecting on the definitions of art, on the temporality of creation, because each work, even an ancient one, has once been contemporary, and raises different societal questions for each era.

Meeting The Lady with the Unicorn in Toulouse allows the public who have never seen her to discover her, and everyone, including those who already know her, to measure how much such a powerful ancient work carries an incredible modernity.

To dialogue with this masterpiece, the exhibition presents the works of Will Cotton, Maïder Fortuné, Rebecca Horn, Suzanne Husky, Agathe Pitié or the American-Italian duo Bella Hunt & SDC represented by Southway Studio. This Marseille workshop is very active in the curatorship, the organization of artist residencies or the realization of art objects and decoration projects. Surrounded by committed artists who use ancestral and sustainable methods and materials, Southway Studio offers the public a new form of contemporary art, which is one with the domestic and everyday setting, like the Monument to the Unicorn, an installation imagined by Bella Hunt & SDC for the exhibition. Both artists perpetuate artisanal production methods to create works with raw and primitive lines, inspired by the ancient world, early Christian art, myths and legends.
