Inspiration: “This necklace with an ancient Egyptian crocodile dating back to Roman times marks the beginning of Gabriela Sismann’s Odyssey. Passionate about Egyptology, the young bachelor leaves the American continent for Paris. Indeed, wishing to carry out excavations on the alleged sites of the tombs of Cleopatra and Antony, she embarked on studies at the École du Louvre in pursuit of her dream, thus reaching the first stage of her journey. This crocodile perfectly illustrates this decisive choice in the life of the designer, and thus embodies one of her first passions. It is probably a votive object for a building, an offering to a deity. Worshipped in ancient Egypt, the crocodile embodies Sobek, a deity associated with the Nile, a nourishing river representing life and abundance with Rain. This bronze element is extremely rare: very few objects in this material represent the crocodile in this way, in its animal form and not in the guise of Sobek. Gabriela fell in love with the object but did not make her purchase until six months later: she needed time to think about the assembly. Here, this reptile is worn against the chest: thus the crocodile crawls on the rib cage and merges with the human body. To create this fusion, a plate was made; Claws catch the crocodile, respecting its integrity, and hold it to this support. Rings connected to this plate include a ram and allow the crocodile to be hung from a gilded silver chain. Thanks to the flexible chain, the crocodile can adapt to the morphology and it can crawl more. Gold, symbol of Eternity and sacredness, has been an essential material since antiquity. The golden silver recalls Gabriela’s attachment to ancient Egypt: according to the Egyptians, the skin of the gods consisted of gold, and their bones of silver. The representations of the sun god Ra illustrate this perfectly.”
