HyunJoo Choi is a contemporary Korean visual artist, active in South Korea and France. Her work explores the themes of memory, materiality, and space through installations and visual compositions that invite contemplation. This artist has developed an artistic practice centered on the exploration of materiality and space. She considers the cube to be “a unique world and an ideal space to provide stability and stimulate the imagination.” Her interest in materiality is manifested in the use of diverse materials, such as metal, paper, and ink, which she combines to create immersive installations. HyunJoo Choi is an artist whose work questions memory, materiality, and space through installations and visual works that invite contemplation. Her artistic approach, combining diverse materials and the exploration of space, offers an immersive experience that encourages reflection on our relationship with the world around us.
The Sensory Issues of Memory Hyunjoo Choi’s artistic approach resembles a phenomenological reduction. Her work is not exhibited as symbols but as sensations. For her, sensory apprehension, the synaesthetic relationship we have with the world, creates the work and materializes within it. The artist imbues her works with a directly or indirectly perceptible emotion, the idea serving simply as perspective. Her latest works play on the transparency and breathing that she always needs to express. The shadows cast in the sculpture evoke the subtle work of memory… And if matter disappeared, would memory still be active?
