    Category: Designer Jewelry

    Artist : Gabriela Sismann

    Origin: England XIXth century

    Materials: Silver-plated metal

Assembly: Modern mounting of a brooch made of silver-plated chatelaine elements

Inspiration: “The chatelaine is a jewel-accessory worn at the waist. It consists of a large hook whose front side is often decorated and several chains ending with charms, scissors and/or a watch. Here the elements represent a series of links in the form of superimposed skeletons, a skull at the end of a chain and… an owl. These skulls, also known as vanities, offer a melancholic meditation on the precariousness of human existence. Among the ancient Egyptians, the owl was traditionally linked to the mysteries of death and darkness, and regarded with awe and reverence. Not only were owls frequently depicted in artwork, but they were sometimes embalmed like mummies. They are a key letter of the hieroglyphic alphabet. They were thought to protect the Truth and prevent those who were not worthy of it from gaining access to higher wisdom.”
